A police officer in Zambia is facing arrest and disciplinary action after allegedly freeing 13 inmates from detention on New Year’s Eve.

A police spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, said Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, who was said to be in a state of intoxication, allegedly seized the cell keys from Constable Serah Banda at Leonard Cheelo Police Station in Lusaka, and went further to unlock the male and female cells, instructing the suspects to leave and cross over into the new year.

The suspects, who were detained on serious charges such as assault, robbery, and burglary, are now at large, while the officer fled the scene after freeing them.
