Google Wallet and Google Pay have officially launched in Nigeria, enabling Android and Wear OS users nationwide to make secure contactless tap-to-pay transactions and digital payments.

In a significant milestone for Nigeria’s rapidly expanding financial technology ecosystem, Google Wallet—incorporating Google Pay—has officially launched nationwide, bringing advanced digital payment capabilities to millions of citizens.
The rollout allows Nigerian users with Android smartphones and Wear OS smartwatch devices to access fast, seamless, and secure contactless payments for daily transactions, online purchases, and event management.
With the official launch, users across Nigeria can digitize supported physical bank cards within the Google Wallet app:
In-Store Tap-to-Pay: Android phone and Wear OS watch users can complete point-of-sale (POS) transactions at supermarkets, retail outlets, and restaurants nationwide by simply tapping their device.
In-App & Online Checkout: Streamlined payment processing for e-commerce platforms and mobile applications without needing to re-enter card details.
Digital Pass & Ticket Management: Ability to store, organize, and manage digital event tickets, boarding passes, loyalty cards, and gift vouchers directly on mobile devices.
Tokenized Security: Transactions utilize industry-standard tokenization, meaning actual credit or debit card numbers are never stored on the device or shared with merchants during transactions.

Setting up Google Wallet on your Android device or Wear OS smartwatch requires just a few simple steps:
An Android smartphone running Android 9.0 or higher with NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled.
A Google Account signed into your device.
A supported debit or credit card issued by a participating Nigerian commercial or digital bank.
Download the App: Open the Google Play Store, search for Google Wallet, and tap Install (or update your existing Google Pay/Wallet app).
Launch & Sign In: Open the Google Wallet app and ensure you are logged into your primary Google Account.
Add a Card:
Tap Add to Wallet at the bottom right corner.
Select Payment Card -> New Credit or Debit Card.
Use your phone’s camera to scan your physical bank card or manually type in your card details (Card Number, Expiry Date, and CVV).
Verification: Accept your bank’s Terms of Service and choose a verification method (typically via SMS OTP or email verification from your bank).
Enable NFC for Tap-to-Pay: Go to your phone’s Settings > Connected Devices / NFC and toggle NFC ON. Set Google Wallet as your default contactless payment application.
Open the Google Wallet app on your Wear OS smartwatch.
Tap Get Started and set up a secure screen lock (PIN, Pattern, or Password) on your watch if you haven’t already.
Follow the on-screen prompt to complete the card addition on your paired Android phone.
Once verified, you can make payments directly from your wrist by double-pressing the side button or opening the Wallet app near a POS terminal.
Supported Card Networks: Initial rollout support covers major Mastercard and Visa debit and credit cards issued by participating Nigerian commercial banks. (Note: Users should check with their respective banking institutions or app notifications for specific card tier eligibility).
Device Security Locks: For tap-to-pay to work, your phone or watch must have an active device lock (Fingerprint, Face Unlock, PIN, or Password). If your device is lost or stolen, you can use Google’s Find My Device feature to remotely lock or erase your digital wallet instantly.
