Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has abolished the ₦750 daily ticket fee for commercial tricycle (Keke) operators and extended their operational curfew to 10:00 PM. Read the full details from the Okpara Square rally.

In a major policy move aimed at easing economic pressure on commercial transporters and boosting night-time economic activities across Enugu State, Governor Peter Mbah has announced the immediate abolition of daily ticket fees paid by commercial tricycle (Keke) operators.

The governor also extended the legal operating hours for commercial tricycles from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM across the state.

Governor Mbah made these announcements on Saturday, October 17, 2026, while addressing thousands of commercial transport workers at Michael Okpara Square in Enugu during a “One Million March” rally organized by the Tricycle Riders Association of Nigeria (Enugu State Chapter) and affiliated transport unions.

Key Highlights of the Governor’s Directives

  1. Abolition of Daily Ticket Fees: Tricycle riders in Enugu State will no longer pay the ₦750 daily ticketing fee, significantly lowering operational overheads and putting more money back into the pockets of operators.

  2. Extended Operational Hours: The operational window for Keke riders has been extended by one hour, allowing them to carry passengers until 10:00 PM (previously restricted to 9:00 PM). This adjustment is expected to support night-shift workers, traders, and evening commuters across the metropolis.

  3. Free Access to Modern Transport Terminals: Governor Mbah confirmed that commercial tricycle operators will continue to access and utilize the state’s newly developed, modern transport terminals at zero cost.

Easing Economic Burdens & Boosting Night Economy

Addressing the enthusiastic crowd at Okpara Square, Governor Mbah emphasized that the decision was driven by his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ livelihoods, boosting disposable incomes, and sustaining business-friendly policies in the state.

“These measures are part of our administration’s deliberate strategy to reduce the financial burden on tricycle operators, increase their daily profit margins, and ensure that transport services remain affordable and reliable for every resident of Enugu State,” the governor noted.

The extension of operational hours to 10:00 PM reflects improved security conditions and ongoing infrastructure enhancements across the state capital, providing safer and more convenient movement for late-hour commuters.

Union Endorsements & Leadership Response

Speaking at the event, the State Chairman of the Tricycle Riders Association of Nigeria, Comrade Kingsley Edeh, expressed deep appreciation to the governor, describing the decision as a massive relief for over tens of thousands of transport workers and their dependents in the state.

Edeh commended the administration’s visible achievements in road construction, security architecture, urban renewal, and public infrastructure—including the completion of long-abandoned state assets like the International Conference Centre (ICC), Hotel Presidential, and Sunrise Flour Mills.
