The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has come under intense public scrutiny following growing concerns from civil society groups and political stakeholders over delays in publishing the full digital voter register online ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The electoral body recently announced that total registered voters nationwide have surpassed 103 million following administrative updates. However, election observers emphasize that timely access to the downloadable, searchable register is vital for maintaining public confidence and enabling voters to verify their credentials.

TRANSPARENCY DEMANDS AND ELECTORAL TIMELINES

Stakeholders and election monitoring groups have reiterated that institutional transparency remains the foundation of credible polls:

  • Calls for Statutory Compliance: Civil society organizations have urged the commission to ensure immediate online publication of the preliminary voter database across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to allow for public scrutiny and claims.

  • Physical Display vs. Digital Access: While physical displays of preliminary registers and PVC collection exercises have commenced at local government and ward centers in select states, stakeholders maintain that full digital publishing on the INEC portal is essential for wider public access.

  • Addressing Voter Suspicion: Public affairs analysts warn that administrative delays in releasing voter registration data risk fueling suspicion and mistrust between the electoral umpire, political parties, and the electorate.

INEC has assured the public that ongoing administrative reconciliation and data cleaning are being finalized, after which updated portal features will be accessible to all registered citizens.
