Japan today held state funeral for its former Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe who was assassinated on July 8, 2022 during a campaign rally.

In a black kimono Abe’s wife Akie walked slowly, carrying her husband’s ashes in a silk-covered funeral jug, which she

placed on a wide altar covered in white chrysanthemums.

About 4,300 attended the ceremony including at least 48 current or former government figures, including U.S. Vice President, Kamala Harris and Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

The 67-year-old politician was assassinated in July, shot twice by a man with a homemade gun, the killing which shocked a country that is not used to gun crimes or political violence, triggering an outpouring of grief for a leader who had never been that popular.
