In a significant boost to industrialization and public health in the South-East, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially commissioned Anchorage Pharmaceutical Industries Limited, a multi-billion naira drug manufacturing facility located in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu.

The commissioning, which took place on Thursday, marks a major step forward in expanding local medicine manufacturing, generating job opportunities, and reinforcing healthcare delivery across the region.

Strategic Healthcare Partnership and Industrial Expansion

Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Mbah described the manufacturing plant as far more than a commercial enterprise, framing it as a long-term investment in public health, economic resilience, and youth empowerment.

Highlighting his administration’s broader healthcare strategy, Governor Mbah revealed that Enugu State is currently constructing 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across all political wards, creating a direct demand for locally manufactured medical supplies:

  • Direct Procurement: The state government plans to explore commercial partnerships with Anchorage Pharmaceutical to supply essential medicines directly to central medical stores and primary healthcare facilities.

  • Made-in-Enugu Policy: Emphasizing a strong preference for domestic production, Governor Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s policy to prioritize locally manufactured products and retain skilled young professionals within the state.

  • Private Capital Integration: The governor noted that attracting and supporting private capital remains central to catapulting Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.

“Anchored in Quality”: Leadership and Operations

Commending the state government’s economic policies, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Rear Admiral Allison Madueke (Rtd)—former Chief of the Naval Staff and former military governor of old Anambra and Imo States—hailed Governor Mbah for fostering an exceptionally investment-friendly environment.

Madueke noted that Anchorage Pharmaceutical was conceived as a legacy project designed to create jobs, develop local talent, and improve regional prosperity while upholding strict regulatory compliance alongside the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Adding further detail, Managing Director Engr. Chima Madueke confirmed that the facility has secured all necessary approvals from NAFDAC and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN):

  • Combating Fake Drugs: The facility aims to actively curb the scourge of counterfeit and substandard pharmaceuticals by supplying verified, high-quality drugs directly to hospitals, healthcare institutions, and licensed retail pharmacies.

  • Corporate Slogan: Operations will be guided by the official motto, “Anchored in Quality, Committed to Wellness.”

The commissioning underscores the increasing inflow of private sector investments under Governor Mbah’s administration, positioning Enugu as a rising industrial hub in Eastern Nigeria.
