ENUGU, NIGERIA — The Enugu State Government has reiterated its strong commitment to driving a sustainable energy transition away from traditional firewood and charcoal toward modern, industrial clean cooking solutions.
This was a key focal point during a specialized entrepreneurship workshop held at the Golden Royale Hotel in Enugu, marking a major milestone for the Clean Cooking Scale-Up Project. The high-impact capacity-building initiative was organized by the Clean Tech Innovation Hub (CTIH) in partnership with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
Representing the state government, the Director of Climate Change at the Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Arum Nnamdi, delivered a goodwill message pledging the full preparedness of Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah’s administration to support the clean cooking transition.
Dr. Arum stressed the urgent necessity of reducing deforestation across the state, warning that unchecked tree-felling strips local soils of their natural cover, leaving them highly vulnerable to severe flash flooding and accelerated environmental degradation.
Outlining the core objectives of the programme, CTIH’s Data-Measurement and Evaluation Officer, Ewah Benjamin, explained that the Clean Technology Hub is dedicated to spearheading the clean energy transition by directly equipping 300 local women in Enugu State with vital clean cooking skills.
He noted that clean cooking delivers a vital triple-benefit framework:
Public Health: Safeguards women and children from dangerous indoor air pollution and smoke hazards linked to firewood and charcoal, which frequently cause severe respiratory diseases.
Environmental Protection: Lowers carbon footprints and curtails rampant deforestation.
Economic Development: Fosters entrepreneurship and green livelihoods within local communities.
Speaking further on the broader vision and sustainability of the project, CTIH’s Head of Energy Access, Daramfon Bassey, noted that the enterprise training is structured to empower semi-urban women with practical knowledge, technical skills, and market opportunities.
She added that the Clean Cooking Scale-Up Project aims to strengthen the overall clean cooking ecosystem, foster sustainable technology adoption, and scale green energy initiatives across target regions, including Enugu and Kano states.
According to Urban Radio correspondent Emeka Chibuoke, the workshop also featured robust support and goodwill messages from the Commissioner for Human Development and Poverty Reduction, Professor Benedeth Ekwitosi Okolie, alongside representatives from various international and local development partners committed to advancing sustainable energy access in Nigeria.
