A court in South Korea has approved the arrest of the country’s President, Yoon Suk Yeol after he was impeached and suspended from power for imposing martial law.

This was confirmed by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, stating that the Seoul Western District Court issued an arrest warrant for President Yoon, which was requested by investigators who were looking into his brief imposition of martial law.

Yoon is being investigated for leading an insurrection, a rare criminal offense in which a South Korean president does not have immunity, with authorities revealing that his impeachment trial is ongoing at the Constitutional Court.

This is the first time a sitting South Korean president has faced arrest and comes at a time the country is dealing with Sunday’s crash of Jeju Air flight 7C2216, which killed 179 people in the deadliest air disaster on South Korean soil.
