The Lagos University Teaching Hospital has announced its readiness to perform the first bone marrow transplant for the cure of sickle cell anaemia as part of activities to mark the 60th anniversary of the health institution.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Chris Bode in his announcement at a press conference on the unveiling of the 3-month long anniversary, said other landmark projects would also be commissioned in the hospital, including a new 30-bedded Intensive Care Unit, ICU being completed while a new outpatient complex is under construction.

He said in medical practice, the hospital has been designated a center of excellence in dentistry alongside a breakthrough of the successful conception and delivery of the first authentic test tube baby; In-Vitro-Fertilization, performed by the duo of Professors Osato Frank Giwa-Osagie and Oladapo Ashiru at the hospital.

Bode stated further that in terms of skilled personnel, LUTH has the highest concentration of skilled medical and paramedical staff in different areas of medicine which explains why she is always the focus when foreign countries, and highbrow private hospitals are recruiting medical manpower, adding that they would continue to engage all stakeholders to define the new goals and projects for the future.
