Peter Obi Rejects Debt Claims, Insists Anambra Owed Zero Salaries or Contractors at Handover

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has strongly pushed back against reports claiming his administration left behind external liabilities. He maintains that he handed over a financially healthy state with zero arrears owed to contractors, civil servants, or pensioners upon leaving office in March 2014.

Releasing handover documents and financial records to back his position, Obi clarified that his administration did not borrow from commercial financial institutions or issue state bonds throughout his eight-year tenure. Addressing recent claims by the current Anambra State Government regarding inherited debt burdens, the former governor challenged critics to independently verify certified bank statements and official handover records from March 2014.

Obi explained that the disputed debt figures conflate long-term multilateral development financing (such as World Bank and IFAD facility arrangements negotiated through the Federal Government) with personal state commercial loans. He emphasized that all completed job certificates, worker salaries, pensions, and gratuities were fully settled, leaving state accounts in a robust net positive position alongside significant foreign-currency investments.
