The Director General of the World Trade Organisation, WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has advised Nigerian politicians to stop weaponising insecurity against their opposition in office.

She made the call yesterday at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, held in Lagos, which was attended by President Bola Tinubu represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, former President of Ghana, John Mahama, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and many others.

Okonjo-Iweala, while speaking on the theme, ‘Pressing Forward; A National Posture to Rebuilding Nigeria, emphasized that security has been weaponized in the country for political purposes by political actors, contributing to the current situation, urging politicians to stop using security issues as a political tool to make their opponents look bad, as such actions only undermine efforts to address the critical issues facing the nation.

Consequently, the WTO boss equally advocated a policy consistency in Nigeria regardless of change from one administration to another, lamenting that a phenomenon she labelled as the not-in-my-administration syndrome in governance, has been responsible for the not-so-good economic performance of Nigeria.
