The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors NARD yesterday declared a five-day warning strike, with the industrial action set to commence tomorrow May 17, and end on Monday, May 22, following the alleged failure of the Federal Government to meet its demand.
The decision to down tool was taken after the doctors’ extraordinary National Executive Council NEC meeting held virtually yesterday but the Federal Government has described the move as unnecessary.
The President of NARD, Dr Emeka Orji who confirmed the incident, however, promised to make a press conference today, with the resident doctors at loggerheads with the Federal Government over poor remuneration, and better welfare for their members among other concerns.
The Minister of Labor Chris Ngige who was addressing newsmen after a special Federal Executive Council meeting, said the parent body of the association, the Nigerian Medical Association NMA, was already engaging with relevant government agencies on the issue.
He also criticized the bill seeking to control the migration of doctors abroad for medical practice stating that it runs contrary to extant labor laws.
