The Director Institute for Peace, Conflict and Development Studies, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Felix Asogwa, has advocated for consensus building in managing separatist agitation in Nigeria, adding that the first step in this direction should be the release of the leaders and members of the separatist movements in detention in Nigeria, especially the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafran, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu and his followers.
Asogwa, who is a Professor of political science, International Relations and Strategic Studies made this call over the weekend while delivering the 42nd Inaugural lecture of ESUT, at the Peter Mbah Auditorium, Agbani, with the theme: ” From Confrontation to Consensus:” Re-engaging the Separatist Agitators for Sustainable Peace in the Nigerian State” noting that it was obvious that the strategies adopted by government in response to the separatist agitations have not yielded the desired positive result of quelling the agitations, urging the federal government to commence the process of reconciliation through consensus building in order to address the growing divisive separatist agitation.
Professor Asogwa underscored the urgent need to re-examine the existing strategies for mitigating the threats to peace and security in Nigeria, insisting that the gap in the existing strategies, which has been predominantly military in nature has not worked anywhere in the world.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Chike Nwoha described the lecture as apt in contemporary Nigeria; adding that inaugural lecture was about sharing ones research journey into becoming a professor.
Delivering the vote of thanks, the Dean of Allied Health Sciences Professor Humphrey Nwobodo commended the inaugural lecturer, Professor Asogwa; describing the lecture as enriching and thought provoking and further commended the vice chancellor and the Inaugural Lectures Committee led by Professor Mellitus Ezeamaenyi for promoting scholarship and learning by giving inaugural lecture series a pride of place in ESUT.
Urban Radio Correspondent, Emeka Chibuoke, reports that the inaugural lecture was graced by the Registrar of the University, Ambrose Ugwu; Commissioner for Water Resources, Felix Nnamani; Provost ESUT College of Medicine Professor Uchenna Ekwochi; Librarian, Jacinta Ukamaka Eze, the Bursar, Augustine Ojeh, alongside, captains of industry, royal fathers, top government functionaries, amongst others.
