PETER OBI DRAGS KENNETH OKONKWO TO COURT OVER BRIBERY ALLEGATIONS

The Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), PETER OBI, has filed a 5 billion lawsuit against his former political ally, KENNETH OKONKWO, over allegations he described as false, defamatory, and damaging to his reputation.

According to a suit filed by OBI’S legal counsel and dated June 9, 2026, the former presidential candidate is seeking legal redress over statements made by OKONKWO during a public broadcast, claiming that Obi and some leaders of the NDC in the South-East collected bribes from aspirants seeking to contest for seats in the House of Representatives.. 

In the suit, instituted through Alex Ejesieme (SAN) of Alex Ejesieme (SAN) & Co. Madiba Chambers, Obi’s legal team strongly denied the allegations, describing them as fabricated and malicious,  and further outlined several other claims allegedly made by OKONKWO, including assertions that documentary evidence existed to support the alleged payments and that receipts had been provided by individuals who reported the matter.

According to the legal filing, OKONKWOwarned aspirants that OBI intended to defraud them, alleging that the former governor frequently travelled abroad to receive money from undisclosed individuals, and accused himalongside NDC leaders in the South-East of engaging in criminal activities.

However, Obi’s legal representatives rejected all the allegations and listed demands including; that Okonkwo immediately withdraws the defamatory statements in their entirety and publish a clear, unequivocal, and unreserved public apology to PETER OBI, as well as writean undertaking that he will cease making or publishing further defamatory statements against their client.
