The Governor of Enugu State, PETER MBAH, has offered full scholarship to HAPPINESS NWAFOR, the Enugu-born minor, who was brutalized by her Anambra-based guardian, ADACHUKWU OKAFOR, stating that the scholarship would cover her studies from primary to university levels.
MBAH who was represented by the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, NGOZI ENIH, made this known yesterday in Enugu, during the official handover of the girl to the Enugu State Scholarship and Education Loan Board for proper documentation and continuation of her education, and also approved her continuous rehabilitation to ensure that her experience does not impede her present or future life.
He expressed displeasure over the continuous record of abuse of minors, who are commonly used as house-help, warning that the state government would not tolerate acts of violence and maltreatment of children by parents and guardians, or any form of child abuse, as such criminal acts would be met with dire consequences in the ambiance of the law.
On his part, the Head of Administration, Enugu State Scholarship and Education Loans Board, PETER NKWUO, while commending the governor for the swift intervention and support to the agency, promised to implement his directive with immediate effect.
The mother to HAPPINESS, NWANNEKA ANIOKE, who said she was traumatized on hearing about the incident, expressed gratitude to MBAH for his kind gesture towards her family and other families, adding that the news of the scholarship and the ongoing rehabilitation for full recovery is a huge relief to her entire family.
