The Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama has revealed that Nigerians stranded in Sudan will be evacuated by road.

Onyeama, during an interview with newsmen, had said that those stranded can’t be evacuated by air, as the airport is out of commission, stressing that the only viable way out is by road.

He claimed that Nigeria’s situation is particularly challenging because the numbers are so great, with about 5,500 persons ready for evacuation.

The minister further added that the diplomatic staff cannot be evacuated at the moment because they need to also coordinate the evacuation of all those students, reassuring Nigerians that their safety and well-being were of priority concern.

His comment comes as a statement from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Khartoum, signed by the Charge D’ Affairs H.Y Garko, advised students who make up about 80 percent of the stranded persons to stay indoors.
