Arsenal were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash last night.
Heading into the match unbeaten in the competition, Arsenal aimed to build momentum but were ultimately denied a first-leg advantage.
The hosts took control in the closing stages of the first half when VIKTOR GYÖKERESconverted from the penalty spot after being brought down inside the box, calmly firing past goalkeeper JAN OBLAK.
Atlético Madrid responded shortly after the restart, minutes into the second half but ahandball by BEN WHITE resulted in a penalty, which JULIÁN ÁLVAREZ confidently converted to restore parity.
The second leg is scheduled to take place at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, where a place in the final will be at stake.
