Senate expands Safe Schools probe, summons TETFund, NELFUND

The Nigerian Senate has ordered a formal investigation into Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State, following allegations of administrative misconduct, unlawful personnel management, and persistent non-compliance with National Universities Commission (NUC) regulatory standards.

The resolution was passed on Thursday following a motion raised by Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), who highlighted severe governance lapses and unauthorized administrative practices within the private institution.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE AND LEGISLATIVE OVERSIGHT

The probe comes as the National Assembly considers an executive bill aimed at repealing the National Universities Commission Act Cap N81, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, to strengthen the NUC’s statutory enforcement powers:

  • Allegations Under Investigation: The probe will review claims of administrative misconduct, disregard for statutory procedures in staff appointments and dismissals, and long-standing leadership tussles within the institution.

  • Potential Statutory Sanctions: Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund to conduct a comprehensive probe. Akpabio warned that if the university is found guilty of gross regulatory infractions, the National Assembly could recommend severe administrative sanctions to the President, including the possible proscription of the institution.

  • Two-Week Timeline: The Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund has been mandated to complete its investigation and present a detailed report back to the Senate floor within two weeks.

The Senate reiterated its commitment to working with regulatory bodies to ensure higher education institutions maintain compliance, academic integrity, and operational transparency across the country.
