Federal Government to Build Three New Power Grids to Curb Collapses - Nigeria Info FM

The Federal Government has approved comprehensive plans to construct new Eastern and Western electricity grids to put a permanent end to the country’s recurring national power grid collapses.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, who highlighted that the government is restructuring Nigeria into three distinct energy transmission corridors to improve operational stability and power distribution efficiency.

DECENTRALIZATION AND REPLACEMENT OF AGEING INFRASTRUCTURE

The ministry revealed that decades of underinvestment and reliance on outdated transmission equipment—some dating back over 50 years to the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria (ECN) era—have made the current centralized grid vulnerable to systemic failures.

  • Regional Grid Clustering: Under the new model, Nigeria is being clustered into strategic energy zones. Establishing dedicated Eastern and Western grid networks will prevent localized technical faults from causing nationwide blackouts.

  • Priority Load Corridors: The expansion prioritizes high-demand hubs, including the Lagos and Abuja corridors, which together account for over 50 percent of the nation’s total electricity demand.

  • Nationwide Technical Audit: A comprehensive technical audit of existing transmission lines, conductors, relays, and substations is nearing completion to identify high-risk failure points before construction begins.

Government projections indicate that full implementation of the regional grid infrastructure will take two to three years, delivering a decentralized, resilient power system for homes and industries across Nigeria.
