The Lagos State Government has commenced the controlled demolition of the structurally compromised 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House located on Martins Street, Lagos Island.

The action follows comprehensive structural assessments conducted by emergency management authorities, which confirmed that the building poses a severe threat to public safety due to extensive structural degradation caused by past infernos.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that the exercise is being carried out in line with global best practices to protect lives and surrounding commercial properties.
Cordoning and Exclusion Zone: The immediate perimeter around the high-rise has been completely cordoned off, with access strictly restricted to emergency responders and technical demolition crews.
Traffic Management: Temporary traffic diversions have been implemented across major access roads on Lagos Island, with LASTMA officers deployed to direct motorists to alternative routes.
Public Advisory: LASEMA has advised nearby traders, property owners, and commuters to maintain a safe distance from the site and adhere strictly to directives issued by emergency personnel until operations are concluded.
