The United States (US) is set to withdraw about 200 military personnel deployed in Nigeria who are currently supporting counterterrorism efforts, with some of the troops expected to depart by the end of September.

American and Nigerian officials said the deployment, despite its limited size, had made a notable contribution to the fight against Islamist militants through intelligence assistance, military support and specialised training.

Despite the planned withdrawal, the US government is expected to sustain its security partnership with Nigeria through intelligence sharing and other cooperation.
