The Anambra State House of Assembly has called on Governor CHUKWUMA SOLUDO to mobilise well-meaning individuals, philanthropic organisations and the organised private sector to support the urgent evacuation of stranded Anambra indigenes affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The appeal followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by the Majority Leader, IKENNA OFODEME, alongside other members during Tuesday’s plenary, as lawmakers expressed concern over the worsening situation facing Anambra citizens in South Africa.
The Assembly noted that many of the affected indigenes, who travelled abroad in search of better economic opportunities, are now experiencing deprivation, insecurity and legal challenges that have placed emotional and financial burdens on their families in Nigeria.
The lawmakers said the situation demands urgent humanitarian intervention in line with the Igbo philosophy of being your brother’s keeper, while appealing to wealthy Anambra industrialists, captains of industry, diaspora organisations, and other stakeholders to support the evacuation effort.
