Vice President KASHIM SHETTIMA has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to develop a roadmap for the adoption of 112 as Nigeria’s single, unified national emergency number, warning that the initiative would not succeed unless all levels of emergency response, from the police and ambulance services to state governors, demonstrate full commitment to its implementation.

The directive was issued during a meeting between SHETTIMA and a delegation from the NCC, led by the Chairman of its Governing Board, IDRIS OLORUNIMBE, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, following the National Economic Council’s approval of the adoption of 112 as the national emergency number.

SHETTIMA directed the NCC to work closely with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), noting the agency’s institutional expertise in disaster management, relief, and rehabilitation across the country.

He also assured the delegation that the necessary funding would be mobilised through the National Economic Council and the private sector, while calling for sustained high-level engagement and commitment from emergency responders to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative.
