Argentina captain, LIONEL MESSI has etched his name further into football history after becoming only the third player ever to score in six consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.
The record was achieved yesterday when the Inter Miami star netted a brace in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria in their latest World Cup group-stage encounter.
MESSI, who entered the match in fine form, having scored a hat-trick against Algeria just days earlier, had also found the net repeatedly during Argentina’s triumphant campaign at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, extending his remarkable scoring streak on football’s biggest stage.
With his goals against Austria, Messi joins an exclusive list of players who have scored in six successive World Cup matches, including France legend JUST FONTAINE, who achieved it during the 1958 tournament, and Brazil icon JAIRZINHO, who did so at the 1970 World Cup.
