The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reassured Nigerians that all Nestlé infant formula products approved for sale in the country are safe.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, MOJISOLA ADEYEYE, gave the assurance in a statement issued yesterday, noting that the products available in Nigeria were not affected by Nestlé United Kingdom’s recent voluntary recall of specific batches of SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula in more than 50 countries.
The agency explained that the recall involved UK batches withdrawn as a precaution over the possible presence of CEREULIDE, a heat-resistant toxin produced by certain strains of BACILLUS CEREUS, which can cause nausea and vomiting.
NAFDAC emphasized that the affected products were neither registered nor authorized for distribution in Nigeria, and further urged members of the public to rely on verified information from the agency, properly dispose of any recalled products if encountered, and report suspected sales to the nearest NAFDAC office.
