The Nigeria Customs Service has introduced a new duty-free threshold of $300 on small-value imports, a move aimed at boosting trade and e-commerce growth in the country.
Effective September 8, 2025, imports valued at US $300 or below will be exempt from customs duties and taxes. This applies to courier shipments, e-commerce parcels, and passenger baggage, but excludes restricted or prohibited goods.
According to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the reform is designed to:
- Ease customs clearance processes
- Reduce costs for businesses and travellers
- Encourage cross-border trade and strengthen Nigeria’s e-commerce sector
The NCS has also announced plans to launch multi-channel helpdesks for compliance support. Importers are warned against fraudulent invoicing or attempts to abuse the policy, as penalties include seizure of goods, arrest, and prosecution.
Some reports indicate that individuals may be limited to four duty-free shipments per year, though further clarification from customs authorities is expected.
This policy marks a significant step in Nigeria’s trade facilitation strategy, with the government positioning it as a tool to support entrepreneurs, expand consumer access, and align with global trade practices.
