The Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC has halted train services along the Abuja-Kaduna route following a derailment incident.
The NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this yesterday at a press briefing in Abuja, stating that services will remain suspended until investigations are completed to identify the cause of the derailment and implement necessary safety measures.
Opeifa refuted claims that the trains were poorly maintained, emphasizing that the corporation has always complied with safety regulations and further said that refunds have already been initiated for all passengers impacted by the disruption.
In addition, the NRC boss also disclosed that six passengers sustained minor injuries and have since been treated, noting that the total number of passengers on board at the time of the derailment has not been ascertained yet.
The derailment incident occurred yesterday along the Kaduna corridor shortly after the train left Abuja around 11 a.m., en route to Kaduna and a passenger on board the train characterized the scene as chaotic, as people scrambled to safety.
