Lille secured a spot in the Champions League play-offs yesterday at the expense of José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, thanks to a Jonathan David penalty in extra time that clinched a 3-2 aggregate victory in Istanbul.

Fenerbahce lost the first leg 2-1 last week and looked to be going out until Bafode Diakite’s late own goal sent the match to extra time.

Though Lille’s substitute Aissa Mandi was sent off on his debut for a reckless challenge on Irfan Can Kahveci, but the visitors were awarded a penalty for a handball by Jayden Oosterwolde and David made no mistake from the spot.

Cenk Tosun headed against the bar as the French team held on to advance to the final qualifying round.

Mourinho was attempting to get Fenerbahce into the revamped 36-team league stage of the Champions League, which he won with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010.
