Abia State Governor, ALEX OTTI, recently unveiled plans to implement a specialized welfare program within the state’s healthcare system come 2024. During the inauguration of the inaugural Abia State Council on Health in UMUAHIA, themed “PROVIDING AN ACCESSIBLE, AFFORDABLE, AND QUALITY HEALTHCARE SYSTEM FOR THE NEW ABIA,” OTTI highlighted the significant impact of the ‘JAPAsyndrome’ on the health sector. This phenomenon sees health workers seeking better opportunities abroad, thereby straining the local healthcare workforce.
In response, OTTI emphasized his administration’s commitment to address this issue by prioritizing healthcare and improving conditions for healthcare workers. The governor pledged to instigate measures to ensure prompt payment of wages and announced forthcoming enhanced welfare packages in 2024, aimed at motivating and retaining healthcare professionals within the state.
Recognizing the pivotal role health plays in the administration’s agenda, OTTI assured the public of a focused approach to elevate the overall health standards. He further pledged to bolster the state’s healthcare system by initiating the recruitment of additional healthcare personnel, a move intended to reinforce the workforce and enhance healthcare delivery.
OTTI also highlighted ongoing efforts in revitalizing the state healthcare scheme, underscoring the continuous provision of free medical services, which had been in effect since the inception of his administration.
