The Governor of Enugu State Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has reiterated the need for Ohanaeze Ndigbo to promote and preserve Igbo cultural heritage as the custodian of Igbo culture and tradition.

Ugwuanyi who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Simon Ortuanya, laid the emphasis at Michael Okpara Square Enugu as the State chapter of the apex Igbo socio-cultural group marks the 2022 IRI-JI New Yam Festival.

In his remarks, Ugwuanyi praised Ohanaeze Ndigbo for the sustenance of the rich cultural heritage of Ndigbo and urged the group not to relent in preserving the cultural values and norms of Igbos.

Speaking on the reason for this year’s yam festival, the State President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Frederick Odo Eze, explained that yam is the king of crops and the IRI-JI festival which symbolizes the conclusion of the farming season and the beginning of the next cycle, is also done in keeping with the age-long tradition of Ndigbo that was laid by the ancestors.
