The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, says declaring a state of emergency over the disastrous flooding across the country was not yet necessary.
Adamu in a television interview yesterday said emergency agencies are not yet overwhelmed, with at least 600 death recorded and millions displaced due to flooding-related disasters this year with many parts of the country still submerged under water.
The Minister said the main cause of the flooding was unprecedented rainfall, adding that rainfall in the Northeast had been four times above the normal average.
Meanwhile, the Presidential candidate of the Labor party for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, yesterday paid a visit to the victims of the flood in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
Speaking with the victims in Makurdi, Obi said, even though he had offered prayers to victims through the governor of the State, Samuel Ortom, he felt that coming in person to commiserate with them is important.
