PRESIDENCY OPENS PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON NATIONAL POLICING BILL

President BOLA TINUBU is expected to receive the proposed National Policing Bill for consideration on September 3, 2026, as the Federal Government advances plans to establish state policing in Nigeria.

Speaking after the Presidential Working Group meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday, the President’s Chief of Staff, FEMI GBAJABIAMILA, disclosed that the drafting process would last seven weeks, from July 27 to September 14.

The Presidency also unveiled a public website to enable Nigerians submit their views and recommendations before the proposed legislation is forwarded to the National Assembly.

GBAJABIAMILA stated that consultations with members of the public would be concluded before the President grants final approval, after which the bill would be transmitted to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.

He described the proposed legislation as a significant milestone in the ongoing reform of Nigeria’s policing structure, emphasising that state police should never be used by governors or other political office holders to victimise their political opponents.
