PETER OBI DEMANDS TRANSPARENT PROBE INTO DEATH OF 37 SUSPECTED ILLEGAL MINERS

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, PETER OBI, has expressed concern over the death of 37 suspected illegal miners arrested and detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Minna, Niger State.

In a post on his verified X handle today, OBI described the incident as deeply disturbing and called on Nigerians to uphold the dignity of human life.

He said irrespective of the alleged offences committed by the deceased suspects, they remained human beings who ought to have been kept alive, safe and treated humanely while due process was followed.

OBI called for a transparent, independent and credible investigation into the deaths, amid reports of disease, overcrowding and inadequate ventilation at the detention facility.

The NDC presidential candidate maintained that security should go beyond arresting people to protecting lives, upholding the dignity of every citizen and ensuring that institutions entrusted with public safety operate within the law.
