The Ondo State House of Assembly has unanimously endorsed the establishment of state police following its consideration of a constitutional amendment bill sent by the National Assembly.

Presenting the House’s recommendations after extensive deliberations during plenary presided over by Speaker Olamide Oladiji, the House Leader, Olatunji Oshati, said state policing would strengthen security through a decentralised system that enables law enforcement agencies to respond more effectively to security threats at the grassroots.

In his remarks, the Speaker expressed optimism that the initiative would reduce the operational burden on the federal police and provide an additional layer of security, while improving coordination in tackling security challenges.

Following the approval of the bill, Oladiji directed the Clerk of the Assembly to forward it, alongside the House’s observations, to the National Assembly.

So far, 25 states have approved the Constitution Sixth Alteration Bill, 2026, which seeks to establish state police services, meeting the two-thirds majority requirement for its implementation as contained in Section 9 of the Nigerian Constitution.
