The Nigeria Labour Congress NLC has denied reports that its President, Joe Ajaero, snubbed an invitation by the Department of State Services DSS before his arrest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Monday on his way to the United Kingdom for an official assignment.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, had claimed that Ajaero’s arrest by the DSS was as a result of his refusal to comply to an invitation from security operatives conducting an ongoing investigation for alleged terrorism financing.
However NLC spokesman, Benson Upah, in a statement yesterday, dismissed the claims as false and misleading, revealing that prior to the arrest, Ajaero had a discussion with the Director General of DSS during a courtesy visit on September 7, informing the DSS of his travel plans and rescheduled the courtesy visit for September 13 upon his return from UK.
He added that DSS boss assured that they would give the congress leadership a 48-hour notice before the visit.
The NLC described Ajaero as a law-abiding citizen and a trade unionist of international repute, who would not disregard invitations
