The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, JOE AJAERO, has decried the rising levels of insecurity, poverty, hardship, inflation, and the devaluation of the national currency, which he said have brought pain and hardship to citizens.

The concerns were raised at the pre-May Day lecture coordinated by organised labour in Abuja, ahead of the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration, where participants criticised what they described as a failing system in which economic reforms have not delivered meaningful relief to ordinary citizens.

AJAERO stated that addressing insecurity and poverty would greatly enhance living standards and economic activities across the country, particularly in agriculture and small businesses, warning that without urgent measures to stabilise prices, secure communities, and safeguard livelihoods, the condition of Nigerian workers could worsen.

In his remarks, the President of the Trade Union Congress, FESTUS OSIFO, called for stronger unity among workers and stakeholders to tackle poverty and insecurity.

He maintained that decent work remains non-negotiable for Nigerian workers and called for increased collaboration to improve working conditions nationwide.
