The Director General of, National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed Habib has urged Nigerians to constantly evacuate solid waste that clog drainage systems, avoid building on flood plains and move to higher grounds whenever there was an early warning of a looming flood disaster.
Habib gave this warning during the handover of humanitarian relief items to the Enugu State Government, for the second batch of the onward distribution to persons and communities affected by the 2022 flood disaster in Enugu State, at Government House Enugu.
The Director General, represented by the Zonal Coordinator of the Agency in the South East, Ngozi Echeazu said that in line with the Agency’s mandate to ensure that all the affected communities were provided with the necessary support to enable them to recover from the disaster.
In a remark, the Governor of Enugu State Peter Mbah who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government SSG, Professor Chidiebere Onyia said the state government had been collaborating with NEMA to meet its mandate in different ways of engagement.
In this same vein, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria(ALGON), who is also the Chairman of Nkanu East local government council, Sydney Ede said that affected local government areas would set up committees to identify the people in the rural areas that are affected by the disaster.
Urban radio Correspondent Ifenyinwa Ogbue reported that the relief items provided were food items, non-food items, clothing materials, building materials, and livelihood items including pumping machines, sewing machines, and grinding machines.
