Mother of Mercy Hospital Awgu Renovated for Improved Healthcare Services

A multi-million remodeled and equipped hospital, Mother of Mercy hospital, IHE, in Awgu local government area of Enugu state, has been officially commissioned to provide essential medical services to the local community and its environs.

The hospital, completely dilapidated with leaky roofs, no functional emergency unit and patient ward, no proper sterilization equipment, and had an epileptic power supply among other lapses, was given a total facelift by the IHE development initiative, IDI in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development goals.

Commissioning the hospital, the Enugu state governor, PETER MBAH, who was represented by the commissioner for health, EMMANUEL OBI, described it as commendable which tallies with the government’s polices to push the poverty index of the state to zero, while he also advocated for more human resources, insisting that the maintenance of the hospital will work best with operations of an advisory board.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the project, the president of IHE Development Initiative, IDI, MADUEKE EKOH, said the project was borne out of the vision to better the lives of the people, by providing subsidized treatments to locals who cannot afford it, as well as employment opportunities and further appealed to the federal, state and local governments to support the initiative by upgrading the hospital to the standard of a general or specialist hospital.

On his part, the chairman of the occasion, Retired Air Commodore, CHIEMEKA OZOEMENA, urged the diocesan catholic institution in charge of the hospital and the people of IHE to protect the facility and ensure the resources put in getting it to its present status would not be a waste.

Meanwhile, the bishop, Catholic Diocese of Awgu, His Lordship, JOHN IFEANYICHUKWU OKOYE, thanked the Ihe development Initiative for remodeling  and equipping the hospital, and encouraged them to also look into other critical areas of interest in the community.

Urban Radio Correspondent, IFEOMA NWABUFOH, reports that the event which witnessed the presence of prominent individuals, including the senator representing Enugu West, OSITA NGWU, member representing Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency, ANAYO ONWUEGBU, among others, also had the commissioning of Tower and City gate built by Ihe group of 10, also known as G10.
