The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has rejected the petition for the recall of the lawmaker representing Kogi Central senatorial district, senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Recently, INEC formally received a petition signed by 250,000 constituents out of about 480,000 registered voters in the senatorial district, calling for the recall process of their Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on Grounds of Loss of Confidence.
However, in a statement issued yesterday by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC, Sam Olumekun, the Commission confirmed that it had verified 208,132 signatures and thumbprints from the recall petition submitted against Senator Natasha, adding that the number falls short of the constitutional requirement by 29, 146 signatures.
INEC stated that the petition did not meet the requirements for recalling a Nigerian senator as stipulated in Section 69(a) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended, hence no further action shall be taken on the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
