The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has said it has commenced an investigation into suspicious photographs, suspected to have been generated by artificial intelligence, AI found in the preliminary register of voters published online.
The Commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, explained that the online register, published on October 26, 2026, is the same preliminary register earlier displayed at registration areas nationwide between October 9 and 15 as part of the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.
He noted that the register is not the final list of voters for the general elections, adding that the exercise allow members of the public to identify irregularities, report inaccuracies and request corrections.
He assured Nigerians that all verified irregularities would be addressed before the final register is certified and published on December 15, 2026.
