The Federal Government has introduced a new initiative it described as smart, durable and economically impactful infrastructure, following the approval of a 150 billion naira extension of the Bodo-Bonny Road project in Rivers State under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement.

The Minister of Works, DAVID UMAHI, made this known during a meeting with the management of Nigeria LNG Limited, stating that the project signifies a transition from traditional road construction to resilient, technology-driven infrastructure.

UMAHI stated that the extension of the Bodo-Bonny Road would be carried out using reinforced concrete technology expected to last between 50 and 100 years, thereby reducing maintenance costs, while the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, MOHAMMED AHMED, confirmed that the project has received presidential approval and will soon be presented to the Federal Executive Council for ratification.

Beyond the road expansion, UMAHI outlined a wider plan to convert Nigeria’s highways into smart economic corridors, incorporating safety measures, environmental sustainability, and digital monitoring systems.

He explained that the government has approved the installation of solar-powered street lighting and extensive tree planting along major road corridors to enhance visibility, improve security, and boost economic activities.
