The Federal Government of Nigeria has donated 250 million naira to families of the 37 suspected illegal miners who lost their lives in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.
The announcement was made by Vice President, KASHIM SHETTIMA, during a condolence visit to the state.
SHETTIMA, who was received by the Governor of Niger State, MOHAMMED UMARU-BAGO, delivered the condolence message of President BOLA TINUBU, stating that the Federal government shares their grief, and reaffirms its commitment to protecting every citizen.
He added that the government will ensure that justice is served, and warned that anyone who attempts to shield the culprit involved in the circumstances that lead to the death of the miners will face the law, stressing that they owed both the deceased and their families justice.
Meanwhile, the Niger State Government disclosed that the total number of miners who died in custody of the NSCDC were 38, noting that one person was killed by gunshot during the ensuing riots.
