The European Commission has unveiled a 235 million euros humanitarian assistance package to support vulnerable populations across West and Central Africa, including Nigeria.
The funding is aimed at addressing the needs of people affected by ongoing conflicts, food insecurity, and displacement, including host communities and populations in hard-to-reach areas.
Out of the total allocation, Nigeria is set to receive 33 million euros, while other allocations include 75 million euros for the Central Sahel region, more than 16.6 million euros for Cameroon, 22 million euros for the Central African Republic, over 72 million euros for Chad, 4.8 million euros for Mauritania, and over 6 million euros for coastal countries, with an additional 6.4 million euros to fund regional projects.
Speaking on the initiative, Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, HADJA LAHBIB, described the region as facing multiple overlapping humanitarian crises driven by conflict, poverty, hunger, political instability, and climate-related shocks, hence the need for humanitarian aid, which she said remains essential for millions to provide access to food, clean water, healthcare, shelter, and education.
The statement added that separate crises persist in north-western Nigeria, as well as in parts of Cameroon and the Central African Republic, underscoring the urgent need for sustained humanitarian intervention across the region.
