Dozens of aggrieved youths and community members stormed the Enugu State Government House on Thursday, protesting the non-fatal shooting of a young man popularly known as “Stone” during a birthday celebration in the Obiagu neighborhood of the state capital.
The demonstrators blocked access corridors leading to the government lodge, demanding an immediate investigation and the prosecution of security operatives involved in the incident.
Eyewitnesses reported that security operatives allegedly opened fire during a private birthday gathering in Obiagu, leaving the victim severely injured before he was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency care:
Demands for Executive Action: Protesters called on Governor Peter Mbah to directly intervene, enforce strict oversight of security outfits, and ensure full medical funding and justice for the victim.
Parallels to Previous Shootings: Demonstrators drew explicit parallels to the October 2024 killing of popular Ogene musician Chikezie Mba (Igbo-Jah), who was shot dead by an operative attached to the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad in Enugu.
Public Anxiety over Security Operations: Community leaders warned that repeated instances of reckless firearm usage by tactical squads risk causing further public unrest across the Enugu metropolis.
Addressing public concerns, state officials and law enforcement authorities confirmed that an official inquiry has been launched into the shooting.
Governor Mbah assured residents that security agencies have been directed to conduct a transparent investigation and hold any compromised personnel accountable in accordance with the law.
