A foreign national has been beaten to death by a mob of approximately 50 people in broad daylight in central Durban, South Africa, amid escalating anti-migrant tensions across the port city.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the violent attack occurred on Thursday morning on the sidelines of a public march along the city center corridor.

DAYLIGHT ASSAULT NEAR PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION

According to preliminary statements issued by police authorities, two men detached from a larger group and confronted the victim before the crowd converged on him:

  • Sequence of Events: Police reported that the victim, estimated to be in his late 30s or early 40s, was standing by the roadside when two men approached him. Shortly after, a mob of nearly 50 people joined in the physical assault.

  • Fatal Injuries: Emergency medical responders arriving at the scene declared the victim dead on site due to severe injuries sustained during the attack.

  • Unconfirmed Identity: Law enforcement officials noted that while the deceased is confirmed to be a foreign national, his specific country of origin and the exact motive for the targeted killing have not yet been established.

SURGING ANTI-MIGRANT UNREST IN KWAZULU-NATAL

The killing follows weeks of heightened hostility and anti-immigration demonstrations across Durban, which has become a major flashpoint for anti-foreign national agitations:

  • Preceding Protests: The incident occurred a day after e-hailing drivers and local pressure groups marched through the same area to protest undocumented foreign workers.

  • Recent Rioting: Two weeks prior, South African authorities deployed military and anti-riot police personnel to central Durban after violent clashes broke out, resulting in the looting of foreign-owned businesses and the torching of over a dozen vehicles.

  • Police Investigation: SAPS has launched a murder docket and intensified patrols in the Durban Central Business District (CBD) to identify perpetrators and prevent retaliatory violence.
