The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General WAIDI SHAIBU, has called for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies into Nigeria’s security architecture to enhance the country’s response to evolving threats.

SHAIBU, who  made the call during the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 Lecture held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army’s 163rd anniversary,  said Nigeria’s security environment has become increasingly complex, requiring innovative strategies, modern technology and stronger collaboration among security stakeholders.

The Army Chief noted that the country’s security challenges now extend beyond insurgency, terrorism and banditry to include cyber warfare, transnational organized crime, resource-related conflicts and technology-driven threats.

He disclosed that despite these challenges, the Nigerian Army has continued to strengthen intelligence gathering, deepen collaboration with other security agencies, and invest in modern technology and personnel development to improve operational effectiveness.

SHAIBU also reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to its “Soldier First” philosophy, stressing that the welfare, motivation and professionalism of personnel remain central to the institution’s transformation agenda.
