HUGO EKITIKE scored a dramatic late winner and was sent off moments later, as Liverpool edged Southampton 2-1 to advance to the Carabao Cup fourth round, despite an early scare at Anfield.

The match saw ALEXANDER ISAK open his Liverpool account, but his first goal for the club was soon overshadowed by EKITIKE’Sheadline-making moment.

Southampton, who were dominant in the early stages, came close to taking the lead when they struck the frame of the goal, but  just 38 seconds later, goalkeeper ALEX MCCARTHY played a loose pass inside his box that was pounced on by FEDERICO CHIESA, who set up ISAKfor the opener.

Despite being pegged back, the Championship side continued to push, but Liverpool once again found a way to snatch victory late on — for the sixth time in seven games this season.

The result maintains Liverpool’s perfect start to the season and ensures last season’s finalists remain on course in their Carabao Cup campaign.
