The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG has suspended its two-day nationwide strike with Dangote refinery agreeing to unionise its drivers.
NUPENG had vowed to continue its nationwide strike after faulting Dangote Refinery Limited over alleged anti-labour activities by restricting drivers hired to operate the company’s 10,000 imported Compressed Natural Gas, CNG trucks from joining any trade union and alleged plan by the company to monopolize the Nigerian Oil Sector.
However, the suspension of the nationwide strike action was confirmed to newsmen last night by the National President of NUPENG, Williams Akporeha, revealing that at a conciliation meeting convened by the minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, between NUPENG and representatives of Dangote refinery, with the intervention of the Department of State Services, DSS, held lengthy discussions that produced a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU signed in Abuja.
The signed MoU stated that, in line with existing laws which guarantee workers’ right to unionise, the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals has agreed to allow employees of both companies who wished to do so to freely join a union.
It was also indicated in the MOU that the unionisation process would begin immediately and be completed between 9th to 22nd September 2025, with an understanding that no parallel union would be created by the employer and further added that no employee would be victimised as a result of the strike notice.
