Cristiano Ronaldo recorded a scoring milestone as Portugal narrowly defeated Hungary 3-2 in their 2026 World Cup qualifier.
The striker scored his 39th goal in World Cup qualifiers yesterday, making him the all-time top goal scorer, drawing level with Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz and moving three goals clear of Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
He scored from the penalty spot in the 58th minute at the Puskas Arena after Hungary’s Barnabas Varga opened the scoring in the 21st minute and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva equalised 15 minutes later.
Varga levelled the score in the 84th minute, while Joao Cancelo struck just two minutes later to seal a dramatic win for Roberto Martinez’s team.
The 40 year old Ronaldo has now increased his international record to 141 goals in 223 matches for Portugal, the highest by any male player for the nation.
