Femi Kuti, renowned musician and eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has revealed why he decided to part ways with his father’s band and pursue his own career.
In a recent interview, Femi explained that his decision stemmed from the desire to break free from the immense pressure of his father’s towering legacy and establish a distinct identity outside Fela’s influence.
He recounted that during his childhood, constant comparisons to Fela especially from wearing similar outfits to being nicknamed ‘mini Fela’, felt stifling and restricted his ability to express himself freely.
Resolute in pursuing his own path, he broke away from his father’s band, a move which came with criticisms as many of Fela’s devoted fans opposed him and the press remained critical, making it hard for him to earn favorable reviews in the early stages of his career.
Nevertheless, Femi said he was able to carve out his own identity as a unique artist, fusing Afrobeat’s traditional African rhythms with contemporary sounds and international influence.
